Cheaper to just buy it on sale unless the half and half is very cheap.
I make ricotta cheese out of it if the milk gets old. I tried making other cheeses, like cheddar and mozzerella, but they didn't turn out good. |

I was thinking the same thing the cost of the half and half would out weigh the cost of just purchasing cream cheese. It may be a useful skill none the less if the SHTF

Re: Make Cream Cheese
Cream cheese is $2 a lb when on sale, $3 if not on sale, and it takes about a gallon of milk to make a pound of cheese. Half and Half is about $1 per pint, which would be $8 a gallon, when its on sale here. I don't think it makes sense to make your own unless you have free milk/cream to work with, or halk and half thats going sour.
That's why I only make cheese when I have milk going sour. For example, right now, its $1.99 per gallon, which is a real good price, so I'll buy 1 1/2 gal per week worth out to the expire date (we use about 1 1/2 gal per week), and that way, I'll get that $1.99 price for the next 4 weeks, and should the last gallon start going sour, I'll make a pound of ricotta from it, and use the whey in pancake batter or potato soup or something. |
